Fujifilm X100T Review in 2024: Leaf Shutter & Built in ND Filter Example Images
This is a quick review of the x100t in 2024. It’s not too technical or scientific, just a simple review based on MY personal preferences. I’ve had this camera for about 4 years now and absolutely love it. It has its positives and negatives but overall I highly recommend it to someone who wants a travel camera, everyday type of camera or a camera with a leaf shutter for off camera flash purposes.
GOOD
I love this camera for so many reasons. It’s reliable & gets the job done, it looks beautiful, and it takes great pictures. I mainly use this camera on vacation trips, weddings and occasional street photography. The leaf shutter is the main reason why I purchased this camera. It allows me to sync my flash at faster shutter speeds compared to my other cameras. If you are unfamiliar with the leaf shutter you can research it’s advantages. I also like the button layout and build of the camera. It’s very solid in my opinion and holds up in a variety of shooting conditions
NOT SO GOOD
There aren’t too many complaints I have with this camera. The only two things I’d mention are autofocus speed and accuracy.
If you prefer a quick autofocus tracking system to capture moving objects, I would say this camera might not be the one. You may want to look for the newer Fujifilm camera body’s such as an X-T3 or an X-H1 or the X-T4. The x100t’s AF system it’s rather slow and sometimes inaccurate. I usually use the single point auto focus mode. I press the shutter halfway down on my subject I want to focus on then recompose my image. I do not use any of the continuous autofocus options so I cannot comment on it’s reliability.
I also noticed that some of the images I take of still subjects tend to be out of focus. When I use this camera for weddings, I wouldn’t rely on it to capture the first kiss or any a big moments during the day due the focus inaccuracy. But this issue isn’t enough of a reason for me to not use this camera. I usually take about 2-3 frames of the same image. I found that if I re-autofocus, or press the button half way down again in between each frame, at least one of my shots will be in focus.
Also, another con for some people might be the fixed 35mm focal length. I personally like this focal length so I don’t mind. I had the wide and tele adapters but I rarely use them unless I’m shooting something on a tripod.
OVERALL
Even though Fujifilm just released the x100v, I still do not see the need to upgrade from the x100t. I’m sure there are many upgrades to the new camera which I will not list here, but personally I feel like the x100t is enough of a camera for me.
Although the newer models of the x100 series have less noise at higher ISO settings, I still do not feel the need to upgrade for that particular reason. I personally do not mind noise in images.
I highly recommend this camera to anyone that’s interested in a purchasing a camera for photography purposes. The video capabilities on this camera aren’t really too great. But I think that is fair since I believe Fuji built this camera for photographers.
Below are a few sample images I have taken with the x100t
UPDATE - 12/5/2021
I got a good deal on the x100f and sold my x100t. The main difference is the menu layout and different picture profiles to choose from. The x100f has more menu options to choose from than the x100t did. I don’t really use too many of the new features on the f than what the t offered. I do sometimes shoot in acros film simulation. Although some of the new simulations are nice, I usually end up editing the contrast, colors, and curves so the extra simulations don’t make a huge difference for my style of shooting.
If I had a choice to get the x100t or the x100f, I’d probably get whichever one was in better condition at a good price. I don’t see a huge enough difference in either option for what and how I shoot. And I think this is a key component on deciding what you need for what you shoot. If you need a feature on the x100f that the x100t doesn’t offer then you might want to go with the x100f. I was hoping the auto focus would be better on the x100f but unfortunately I didn’t see much improvement.
